HTTP based live on demand HLS

HLS (HTTP live streaming) is a new streaming protocol that Apple released in 2009 and can be distributed through a common web server. Apple officially proposed HLS solution for video live service, which is mainly applicable to:

（1）Streaming features are available on iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple TV. (MAC can also be used)
（2）No special service software is used for streaming.
（3）Video on demand service that requires encryption and authentication.

HLS aims to enable users to play streaming media through normal network services on Apple Devices (including Mac OS X). HLS supports both live and on-demand streaming services of streaming media, and multiple standby streams with different bit rates (usually adaptive video clarity according to current network speed), so that clients can only adjust the current video stream according to the bandwidth of the current network. In terms of security, HLS provides encryption and verification of media files through HTTPS encryption, allowing video publishers to protect their own network.

Compared with the common streaming media live protocol, such as RTMP protocol, RTSP protocol, MMS protocol, the biggest difference of HLS live broadcast is that the live broadcast client gets it, and it is not a complete data stream. HLS protocol stores live data stream as continuous and short-term media files (mpeg-ts format) on the server side, while clients constantly download and play them. Because the server always generates new small files from the latest live data, so that the client can realize live broadcast as long as they keep playing the files obtained from the server in sequence. It can be concluded that HLS is to realize live broadcast by on demand technology. The technical characteristics of HLS determine that its delay is always higher than that of the ordinary streaming broadcast protocol.

HLS only requests basic HTTP messages. Unlike RTP, HLS can pass through any firewall or proxy server that allows HTTP data to pass. It is also easy to use content distribution networks to transfer media streams. Because the data is transmitted through HTTP protocol, the firewall or proxy is not considered at all. Moreover, the time of segmented files is short. The client can quickly select and switch the code rate to adapt to the playback under different bandwidth conditions.

Apple has also taken tough measures to promote its own HLS. When your live content lasts for 10 minutes or more than 5 MB in every five minutes, your app live service must adopt HLS architecture, otherwise it is not allowed to go on the shelf.

VLC media player: support live and on demand HLS from 2.0.
Wowza media server: released 2.0 on December 9, 2009, and started to fully support HLS.
Vodobox live server: HLS is supported at first.

How far(long) the transmitter cover? The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the antenna installing height , antenna gain, using environment like building and other obstructions , sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver . Installing antenna more high and using in the countryside , the distance will much more far. EXAMPLE 5W FM Transmitter use in the city and hometown: I have a USA customer use 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and he test it with a car, it cover 10km(6.21mile).
