Introduction to MDI (RFC 4445)

Jitter and timing distortion will occur during transmission and exchange of MPEG video streams through the Ethernet network after being packaged. The key of Video over IP testing technology is to test network jitter and packet loss. At present, the best method is to use a measurement index called MDI (Media Delivery Index) for testing and measurement. The MDI indicator is applicable to any kind of media stream transmitted through the network, and can be used for performance testing and evaluation of Voice Over IP, Video Over IP and other systems. According to this requirement, RFC 4445 was launched in April 2006, which is mainly used for video quality assessment in IPTV networks.

MDI consists of two parts, DF (Delay Factor) delay parameter and MLR (Media Loss Rate) media loss rate. DF refers to the difference between the maximum and minimum values obtained by dividing the number of media stream bytes flowing into and out of the test node by the media stream rate in a unit time interval (usually 1 second).

DF= [Max (incoming bytes-outgoing bytes)-Min (incoming bytes-outgoing bytes)]/media stream rate

Its calculation results reflect the jitter changes related to the media stream, and it can also reflect how much buffer or buffer time is needed for the media stream in the case of timing distortion to eliminate the negative effects caused by jitter or timing distortion , Such as overload, packet loss, screen freeze, etc.

Compared with the general two- and three-layer jitter (InterArrival Time) calculations, the DF indicator is specifically for media streams, and its calculation factor is the media stream rate, not the general physical transmission rate. Therefore, it can be used to evaluate the quality of video transmission and playback.

MLR=(the number of bytes of the media stream that should be received ideally-the number of bytes of the media stream actually received)/interval time in seconds, the result of MLR is actually the number of media stream words lost per second The number of sections.

MDI can be used to install, debug or evaluate the quality of a video network: by measuring MLR, you can confirm, locate and track the media stream loss of the network; use the DF parameter to confirm, locate and track the jitter of the network.

MDI is a very important evaluation index for Video Over IP networks, which can be used to accurately measure and monitor network jitter and delay that affect the quality of video transmission; it can accurately reflect the quality of a large number of concurrent media streams, and can provide more than subjective observations. Accurate measurement results. Through the evaluation, you can know how many IPTV users the network can support, provide a basis for network design, equipment deployment, and help analyze possible problems in the network, so that users have enough time to take corrective measures before the network fails.

The MDI video evaluation standard has been accepted and recognized by major companies and standard organizations at home and abroad, and has been widely adopted.

How far(long) the transmitter cover?

The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the antenna installing height , antenna gain, using environment like building and other obstructions , sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver . Installing antenna more high and using in the countryside , the distance will much more far.

EXAMPLE 5W FM Transmitter use in the city and hometown:

I have a USA customer use 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and he test it with a car, it cover 10km(6.21mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in my hometown ,it cover about 2km(1.24mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in Guangzhou city ,it cover about only 300meter(984ft).
