Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a technology applied in metropolitan area networks and wide area networks. It combines two or more optical carrier signals of different wavelengths (carrying various information) at the transmitting end. A technology in which multiplexers (also known as multiplexers) are combined together and coupled to the same optical fiber for transmission; at the receiving end, through a demultiplexer (also known as a demultiplexer or demultiplexer) Demultiplexer) separates the optical carriers of various wavelengths, and then the optical receiver performs further processing to restore the original signal. This technology of simultaneously transmitting two or many optical signals of different wavelengths in the same optical fiber is called wavelength division multiplexing.
At present, the transport network mainly uses SDH/SONET and WDM networks. SDH/SONET focuses on the processing and scheduling of the service electrical layer, while WDM focuses on the processing and scheduling of the service optical layer. With the large number of applications of data services, the demand for network bandwidth is increasing. SDH/SONET networks have shown obvious shortcomings in cross-scheduling and scalability. Scheduling flexibility also puts forward higher requirements, the original technical system is powerless, and the Optical Tranport Network (OTN) emerges at the historic moment.
OTN technology applies the operable and manageable capabilities of SDH/SONET to the WDM system. It also has the advantages of SDH/SONET and WDM and defines a complete system structure. It has corresponding management and monitoring mechanisms for each layer of the network. Both optical and electrical layers have network survivability
The mechanism can truly meet the carrier-class requirements required by operators. OTN is a network composed of a group of optical network elements connected together by optical fiber links, which can provide optical channel transmission, multiplexing, routing, management, monitoring and protection (survivability) that carry client signals. An obvious feature of OTN is that the transmission settings for any digital client signal have nothing to do with the customer-specific characteristics, that is, customer independence. OTH (Optical Transport Hierarchy) is a new connection-oriented transport technology used to develop OTN. OTN has a large expandable capacity and is most suitable for the backbone of the MESH network. In the ideal situation in the future, the transmission network should be an all-OTN network. Compared with SDH, OTN belongs to the next optical transmission network.
Compared with traditional SDH and SONET equipment, OTN has the following 4 advantages:
(1) Stronger Forward Error Correction (FEC) capability.
(2) More levels of tandem connection monitoring (Tandem Connection Monitoring, TCM)
(3) Transparent transmission of client signals.
(4) Scalability of exchange
