OTT (Over The Top), in the communications field, refers to the provision of services including SMS, voice and even video with the help of operators' network services. In the TV field, OTT TV provides TV programs to users through the operator's network. Internationally, OTT TV transmits integrated services such as IP video and Internet applications through various network viewing terminals (TV, computer, Pad, smart phone, etc.) facing users through the public Internet.
Unlike traditional analog cable TV and classic digital TV, both OTT TV and IPTV broadcast video content through IP networks, but IPTV and OTT TV still have essential differences in many aspects. In my country, based on national conditions and the influence of some policies, the differences between domestic OTT TV and IPTV are mainly reflected in the following points.
1. Content provider.
Due to policy restrictions, the operation of IPTV and OTT TV requires relevant licenses issued by relevant departments. Currently, those who have obtained IPTV content provider licenses include Shanghai Media, CCTV International, Southern Media, International Radio, etc. The content providers of OTT TV are Internet integration platform licensees, including 7 companies including Wasu, Bestcom, and Southern Media.
2. Business Operator
The business operation of IPTV business is undoubtedly the responsibility of telecom operators. The OTT TV service is provided by seven Internet integration platform licensees. After the user rents the operator’s broadband service, the OTT service will no longer bring other benefits to the telecom operator.
3. Network
The dissemination of IPTV TV content is based on a dedicated network built by telecom operators. The initial investment is relatively large, but the network bandwidth and video quality are guaranteed for users. The dissemination of OTT TV requires only ordinary public broadband Internet as the basis, and a certain bandwidth is required to ensure the quality of video services. In the next few years, optical networks will greatly increase the bandwidth of broadband Internet, which will largely guarantee the video quality of OTT TVs and even high-definition OTT TVs.
4. Terminal
The IPTV terminal is the operator’s collection of STB+ ordinary home TV. Since IPTV set-top boxes are generally gifted by operators when users handle services, the cost is relatively low, and they need to cooperate with IPTV private networks, openness and operability are restricted, and most of them are non-intelligent set-top boxes. The terminal of OTT TV is an OTT set-top box + display (TV, computer, Pad, mobile phone, etc.), and the set-top box can even be placed in the TV. At present, the more popular mainstream set-top boxes are basically the cooperation between hardware manufacturers and seven licensees that have obtained licenses to launch smart set-top boxes that bind services and hardware.
5. Video coding technology
IPTV video uses H.264 video coding technology. The video of OTT TV supports a variety of video coding and decoding technologies based on terminal configurations such as set-top boxes. Compared with IPTV video, the bit rate is lower, and it has an adaptive function to keep the service uninterrupted in a poor network environment. How far(long) the transmitter cover?
The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the antenna installing height , antenna gain, using environment like building and other obstructions , sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver . Installing antenna more high and using in the countryside , the distance will much more far.
EXAMPLE 5W FM Transmitter use in the city and hometown:
I have a USA customer use 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and he test it with a car, it cover 10km(6.21mile).
I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in my hometown ,it cover about 2km(1.24mile).
I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in Guangzhou city ,it cover about only 300meter(984ft).
