Recently, I have received a notice from the operator’s customer service that IPTV unicast will be completely stopped in October. The original IPTV unicast network set-top box is completely deactivated, and it is required to go to the business hall to pre-store the phone bill to receive the 4K high-definition network set-top box before October. In fact, it is the operator-customized set-top box, but it is a multicast method.
Let me briefly introduce the operator network set-top box I used before. The box is Skyworth E310. The configuration is very low. The playback mode is unicast (also can be understood as on-demand). Both live TV and video programs use broadband networks and occupy bandwidth. The advantage is It can be connected to a wireless router via WiFi, which is very convenient. (Digression: The box hardware configuration is very low, already harmonious, you can install third-party applications at will, and watch live broadcasts for free)
Due to the low configuration of the box, it is currently idle. I am currently using the idle mobile Mobaihe, and installed a third-party live broadcast software after flashing the phone. At present, the hardware parameters of the set-top boxes of the three major operators are basically 1G memory and 8G flash memory, and watching TV is still very smooth.
After Mobaihe is refreshed, you can install software at will, watch live TV and on-demand online videos for free, and the experience is very good. The new version of Mobaihe in 2019 has been upgraded to a voice remote control version, which is perfectly adapted after flashing, and it can be voice-controlled to switch channels, adjust volume, and shut down.
Those who are interested in flashing can communicate and learn from each other. The purpose of flashing is to avoid waste and let idle set-top boxes be used as waste.
Closer to home, let's take a look at the two ways of playing IPTV. There are two commonly used networking for IPTV, namely multicast and unicast. The unicast method used by Skyworth E310 introduced at the beginning of the article, the unicast method uses Internet traffic, each set-top box establishes a one-to-one connection with the server, and the server has a heavy burden. When there are too many clients, the server responds slowly and the video freezes. This is one of the reasons why ordinary network STBs are not as smooth as custom STBs.
Multicast mode, as the name implies, a group. The server broadcasts a group. As long as the IPTV box passes the account verification and joins the receiving group, the server broadcasts video data to this group. It saves server bandwidth, reduces server load, and uses multicast to watch IPTV. The data stream does not occupy Internet bandwidth, and it is two independent data streams from home broadband. The disadvantage is that the IPTV set-top box must be connected to the ITV network port of the optical modem through a network cable.
Multicast must use a network cable to connect to the optical modem, and unicast can connect to the network through WiFi without restriction. The two networking methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Unicast networking is convenient and occupies home network bandwidth. Compared with that, it is more flexible. When there are too many users, the pressure on the operator's server is very high. The reason for the broadcast conversion.
In summary, unicast can be simply understood as a one-to-one communication between a server and a set-top box, and multicast is equivalent to a server broadcasting a group of set-top boxes. When there are more users, the former has higher requirements on the server, and the latter has lower server usage.

How far(long) the transmitter cover?
The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the antenna installing height , antenna gain, using environment like building and other obstructions , sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver . Installing antenna more high and using in the countryside , the distance will much more far.
EXAMPLE 5W FM Transmitter use in the city and hometown:
I have a USA customer use 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and he test it with a car, it cover 10km(6.21mile).
I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in my hometown ,it cover about 2km(1.24mile).
I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in Guangzhou city ,it cover about only 300meter(984ft).
