What is PAL

Phase Alternating Line (PAL) is a color coding system for analog TV, which was born in 1961 in the United Kingdom. It is characterized by 624 horizontal lines per frame and 25 frames per second. PAL is used in broadcast television systems in many countries, and together with NTSC and SECAM systems, it is one of the three major broadcast standards.

Similar to the NTSC system, the phase alternating line uses quadrature amplitude modulation subcarriers to add chrominance data to the video signal. The frequency of PAL is 4.43361875 MHz, and the frequency of NTSC is 3.579545 MHz. PAL scans the cathode ray tube 625 times horizontally to form a video image. This is similar to the SECAM system. The screen resolution of PAL is 720×576 pixels. By adding extra frames, PAL video can be converted to NTSC. This can be achieved by techniques such as adaptive motion interpolation or inter-field interpolation.

Compared with NTSC, PAL has more detailed images because it has more scan lines. In addition, PAL is more stable than NTSC. PAL has higher contrast and better color reproduction capabilities. Unlike NTSC, the PAL system can achieve automatic color correction, while NTSC uses manual color correction. In fact, PAL is considered to have better picture quality than NTSC.

However, the PAL frame rate is slow, resulting in less smooth motion, and the saturation between frames sometimes changes. The image itself sometimes flickers. NTSC has smoother pictures than PAL, especially high-speed footage, because it has a higher frame rate.

How far(long) the transmitter cover?

The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the antenna installing height , antenna gain, using environment like building and other obstructions , sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver . Installing antenna more high and using in the countryside , the distance will much more far.

EXAMPLE 5W FM Transmitter use in the city and hometown:

I have a USA customer use 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and he test it with a car, it cover 10km(6.21mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in my hometown ,it cover about 2km(1.24mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in Guangzhou city ,it cover about only 300meter(984ft).
