What is push streaming?
Streaming is a data transmission method that people use when watching videos on the Internet. This is a method that usually distributes video files from a remote storage location one at a time. By transferring a few seconds of files on the Internet at a time, the client device does not have to download the entire video before starting to play.
Real-time streaming refers to the situation where streaming video is sent over the Internet in real time without recording and storing first. Nowadays, TV broadcasts, video game streaming and social media videos can all be streamed in real time. Think of the difference between regular streaming and real-time streaming as the difference between actor recitation of a monologue and impromptu speech. In the former, the content is created in advance, stored and forwarded to the audience. In the latter, the audience receives the content as the actors create it, just like in real-time streaming.
The term "real-time streaming" generally refers to broadcast real-time streaming: one-to-many connections, connecting to multiple users at once. Video conferencing technologies such as Skype, FaceTime, and Google Hangouts can be used for real-time communication (RTC) protocols instead of the protocols used for one-to-many real-time streaming broadcasts.
On a technical level, how does real-time streaming work? These are the main steps that happen behind the scenes in the live broadcast:
1. Divide
2. Compression
3. Coding method
4. Content delivery network (CDN) distribution
5.CDN cache
6. Decoding
7. Video playback
8. Video capture
Real-time streaming starts with raw video data: the visual information captured by the camera. In the computing device to which the camera is connected, this visual information is represented as digital data-in other words, 1 and 0 at the deepest point.
Segmentation: A video contains a lot of digital information, which is why it takes longer to download a video file than to download a short PDF or image. Since it is not realistic to send all the video data through the Internet at once, the streaming video is divided into several small segments with a length of a few seconds.
Compression and encoding: Next, the segmented video data is compressed and encoded. Compress data by removing redundant visual information. For example, if the first frame of the video shows a person speaking on a gray background, the gray background does not need to be rendered for any subsequent frames with the same background. Think of video compression like adding new furniture in the living room. Every time you add a new chair or side table, you don’t have to buy brand new furniture. Instead, you can keep the room layout roughly the same, and only change one at a time, and occasionally make larger rearrangements as needed. Similarly, it is not always necessary to render every frame of a video stream, but only the parts that change between frames, such as the movement of a person's mouth.
"Encoding": Refers to the process of converting data into a new format. Real-time streaming video data is encoded into an interpretable digital format that can be recognized by multiple devices. Common video coding standards include: H.264, VP9, AV1
CDN distribution and caching: Once the real-time stream is divided, compressed and encoded (all the process takes only a few seconds), it needs to be provided to hundreds of thousands or millions of viewers who want to watch it. In order to maintain high quality while minimizing delay, while providing the stream to multiple viewers in different locations, the CDN should distribute it.
Decoding and video playback: The CDN sends the real-time stream to all users who are watching the stream. Each user's device receives, decodes and decompresses the segmented video data. Finally, the media player on the user's device (a dedicated application or a video player in the browser) interprets the data as visual information, and then plays the video.
