What is the difference between RTMP and RTSP? How to differentiate?

When we receive video from a webcam, we must first understand the protocol (RTSP/RTMP/HTTP), then the decoding format (MKV, RMVB), and then decode the video (H264) and audio (AAC) format data into The image (RGB/YUV) and sound (PCM) are synchronized to the streaming media platform (such as the live video on-demand platform EasyDSS) according to the timestamp. This article tells you what is the difference between RTMP and RTSP in video streaming media server?

Everyone knows that the different video streaming media servers we have developed are connected to different protocols. The national standard streaming media server accesses the GB28181 protocol, and the live video on demand streaming media server accesses the RTSP and RTMP protocols.

RTSP+RTP is mainly used for IPTV, the reason is that UDP is used to transmit data, and the transmission efficiency is relatively high when the network environment is relatively stable. Our EasyNVR and national standard streaming media server can use UDP for video data transmission.

RTMP is mainly used for Internet audio and video transmission. It uses TCP transmission. Because the Internet environment is relatively poor, the use of RTMP ensures the transmission quality of the video, but its transmission delay is relatively high and the transmission efficiency is relatively low. Our live video-on-demand platform EasyDSS uses TCP for transmission. If you need to watch high-quality video surveillance online, it is recommended to use the EasyDSS video-on-demand platform.

Based on our video streaming media service platform, whether using RTSP or RTMP protocol, you can watch videos directly on the PC side. Users only need to open the web page to directly watch the streaming media without installing plug-ins, which is very convenient.

Live broadcast services generally use RTMP as the streaming media protocol, FLV as the encapsulation format, H.264 as the video encoding format, and AAC as the audio encoding format. FLV is the packaging format used by RTMP, H.264 is the video coding standard with the highest coding efficiency in practical applications today, and AAC is the audio coding standard with the highest coding efficiency in practical applications today.

Librtmp is the implementation of the RTMP protocol. You can use librtmp to implement protocol analysis and data transmission and reception. The live broadcast server can be implemented based on nginx+rtmp; the live broadcast client uses librtmp to push the stream, and FFmpeg is responsible for encoding; the watching client uses VLC, because VLC itself can parse the RTMP stream as well as the encoded video data.

How far(long) the transmitter cover?

The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the antenna installing height , antenna gain, using environment like building and other obstructions , sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver . Installing antenna more high and using in the countryside , the distance will much more far.

EXAMPLE 5W FM Transmitter use in the city and hometown:

I have a USA customer use 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and he test it with a car, it cover 10km(6.21mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in my hometown ,it cover about 2km(1.24mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in Guangzhou city ,it cover about only 300meter(984ft).
