WebRTC is a technology for real-time video and audio communication inside the browser. It is a technology acquired by Google in 2010 when it acquired Global IP Solutions for US$68.2 million. [1]
WebRTC implements web-based video conferencing, the standard is WHATWG protocol, the purpose is to provide a simple javascript through the browser to achieve real-time communications (Real-Time Communications (RTC)) capabilities.
The ultimate goal of the WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) project is to allow Web developers to easily and quickly develop rich real-time multimedia applications based on the browser (Chrome\FireFox\...) without downloading and installing any plug-ins. Web development Users don’t need to pay attention to the multimedia digital signal processing process, just write a simple Javascript program. W3C and other organizations are developing Javascript standard API, which is currently WebRTC version 1.0, in Draft state; in addition, WebRTC also hopes to establish a multi-Internet browser A robust real-time communication platform between browsers forms a good ecological environment for developers and browser manufacturers. At the same time, Google also hopes and is committed to making WebRTC technology one of the HTML5 standards, which shows the far-reaching layout of Google. [2]
WebRTC provides the core technology of video conferencing, including audio and video capture, codec, network transmission, display and other functions, and also supports cross-platform: windows, linux, mac, android.
1. The good news for webRTC
1. Microsoft pre-uses webRTC to create a pure green version of html5 skype
There is evidence that Skype Web App will support the WebRTC standard. The WebRTC standard will help users create a new architecture and allow WebRTC terminals to directly communicate with other terminals in the Skype network, eliminating the need for a gateway to complete. The Skype Web App on the browser developed by Microsoft this time is based on HTML 5 and JavaScript. With the addition of WebRTC, Skype Web App is bound to be more mature and easy to use.
2. W3C is developing WebRTC
Microsoft released a working prototype of the HTML5 real-time voice and video communication protocol CU-RTC-Web, which supports IE10 and Chrome browsers. CU-RTC-Web is a real-time communication protocol specification proposed by Microsoft last year, but it is not a specification for W3C's key work. The specification being developed by the W3C working group is WebRTC, which has received preliminary support from Chrome and Firefox, but there are still many problems with interoperability.
3. Chrome and Firefox realize interoperability through WebRTC
The interoperability between browsers is achieved through the RTCPeerConnection object (RTC peer-to-peer connection). This means that the Firefox WebRTC application created by the developer can make direct audio/video calls with the Chrome WebRTC application, which prevents users from installing defective plug-ins. At the same time, it is easier and more convenient for developers to deploy applications.v
