What does RS232 stand for

The RS232 protocol is a popular serial interface used to connect computers to network devices such as serial servers. We will learn about RS232 serial pins and some other reference information of the protocol.

The RS232 protocol uses a signal level different from the standard 5V to transmit line data to minimize signal interference. It performs asynchronous transmission at a constant speed, synchronized with the level of the start pulse signal. The maximum length of 20 meters is the limit for reliable data transmission using the RS232 interface.

The data transmission standard is formulated by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA). The prefix RS indicates recommended standards, and all EIA standards begin with these characters. The formal specification of RS232 is the interface for communication between DTE and DCE equipment using serial binary data exchange. DTE is the abbreviation of Data Terminal Equipment, and DCE stands for Data Communication Equipment. The basic examples of these two devices define the computer as a DTE device, and the serial server plays the role of DCE.

Serial communication is realized by transmitting serial data between DTE and DCE. For example, a computer (DTE) can serially send binary data 1101101 to a serial server (DCE), and the serial server can reply by sending 11010101 to the DTE device.

The RS232 protocol is used to transmit data between DTE and DCE in a specified operating mode, electrical standard, number of bits, and voltage level.

How far(long) the transmitter cover?

The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the antenna installing height , antenna gain, using environment like building and other obstructions , sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver . Installing antenna more high and using in the countryside , the distance will much more far.

EXAMPLE 5W FM Transmitter use in the city and hometown:

I have a USA customer use 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and he test it with a car, it cover 10km(6.21mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in my hometown ,it cover about 2km(1.24mile).

I test the 5W fm transmitter with GP antenna in Guangzhou city ,it cover about only 300meter(984ft).
