    What is XLR connector

XLR connector, rear XLR terminal, XLR balance plug, Cannon plug, XLR "Jialong" plug, the full English name is Cannon X Series Latch Rubber, commonly known as XLR connector, or Canon head (Cannon), based on the original producer James H. Cannon (founder of Cannon Electronics in Los Angeles, California, the company is now under ITT), the initial terminal was the "Cannon X" series, and the later version added a latch to become " The "Cannon XL" series, followed by rubber-wrapped (Rubber) on the contact surface of the terminal, became the source of its abbreviation XLR. The Canon head is a direct plug-in audio plug, which is easy to install. It is a typical product of "no screwdriver" plug. It has a shell made of metal or plastic, with a tenon or a hole for the tenon to hook, so that the male and female heads of the Canon head will not fall off after being combined, so that the connection is firm.

It is completely different from the RCA terminal (lotus head) that directly transmits sound through an analog audio cable. The XLR terminal is a balanced analog audio connector: the analog audio cable transmits sound directly, and the Balanced analog audio interface uses two channels to transmit separately. Signals with the same signal but opposite phase; the receiving end equipment subtracts these two sets of signals, and the interference signal is cancelled out, thereby obtaining a high-quality analog signal.

The EIA RS-297-A standard describes the use of XLR3 terminals for balanced audio: the wiring of the three XLR contacts is generally in accordance with the following American rules (see the figure below): 1-Ground chassis ground, 2-positive hot end (live wire) , 3-negative cold end (return terminal); of course, some equipment (usually European or Japanese products) also stipulate that 3 is the positive hot end and 2 is the negative cold end; in this way, you need to see the equipment clearly Instructions.

The XLR connector is the most widely used connector in professional audio systems, and can be used to transmit various audio signals in the audio system, such as microphones. Generally, balanced input and output terminals are connected by XLR connectors. The advantages are as follows: a. Balanced transmission mode is adopted, which has strong anti-interference ability and is conducive to long-distance transmission (not more than 100 meters). b. With spring locking device, the connection is reliable and not easy to pull off. c. The connector specifies the signal flow direction, which is convenient to prevent connection errors.

Cannon plugs are divided into male and female sockets, and sockets are also divided into male sockets and female sockets. The male plug-in point is a pin, and the female plug-in point is a socket. According to international common practice, male plugs or sockets are used as signal output terminals; female plugs and sockets are used as signal input terminals. According to the number of contacts of XLR connectors, there are mainly the following types on the market:

            1. XLR-3: 3-pin Canon head and microphone cable. It is the most commonly used and earliest product, and it is also a standard balanced signal in the audio industry. Due to the low cost of XLR-3 and its convenience for emergency rescue when there is a shortage of wires on site, lighting manufacturers also use 3P XLR connectors; because XLR-3 connectors can support up to 15A normal current, and are difficult to obtain in normal life Features. In Europe, the 3P XLR connector is also selected as the charging connector for electric bicycles/electric wheelchairs.

             2. XLR-4: 4-pin Canon head. Wide range of uses: intercom headsets, two pins are used for mono headphone signals, and two pins are used for unbalanced microphone signals; DC power connections for broadcast-grade cameras and related equipment; some mixer lights interface.

             3. XLR-5: 5-pin Canon head. It is generally used for standard DMX512 digital lighting control, and two DMX channels are output at the same time on the 5-pin.

             4. XLR-6: 6-pin Canon head. Used for: dual-channel internal intercom system; LED lamps of some manufacturers use 6P XLR connectors to send out RGB three-color different currents.

             5. XLR-7: 7-pin Canon head. Used for: remote control connection, such as Le Maitre and Ultratec smoke machine; sometimes as a fast connection before the 3-way system.
