This is my portable console based on Raspberry Pi 3, starting from scratch.
This system is based on simulation build, can play classic game consoles, such as Sega Megadrive, Super Nintendo, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation, etc.
I am a Swedish designer, engineer and game enthusiast. Since I am a child, I have been playing in Sega Megadrive, video games have always been my huge enthusiasm. I have been interested in game hardware, especially for portable game consoles.
When I purchased PSP in 2008, I can first add some simulators in the portable console. So now I can play all the classic games that haven't played for a long time. The only small problem for playing analog games on the PSP is the screen. It is very small, the aspect ratio is incorrect, so a black border appears. Since then, I always want to build my own portable console and solve these problems. So in the end, in the end of 2018, I have knowledge and ideas for how to start the project.

I am using a 7.9-inch LG display, which is the same as the model on the iPad mini 3. I have found many other monitors, their size and aspect ratio I want. But I chose LG, although it is more expensive, because it is brighter than other displays and better color reproduction.
In order to improve the audio quality of Raspberry Pi, I provided a USB DAC (16-bit, 48 kHz). I must also include an amplifier board to power the speaker. For buttons and D-PAD, I use a soft haptic switch to make Most game controllers have the same feeling.
design
My design is inspired by many different sources, not just game hardware. I am trying to make it small and thin as possible, but it can still keep it a comfortable game status for a long time.
There are two buttons at the top, one for adjusting the brightness of the screen and the other for shutting down the system. There is also a power switch that can completely turn off the console power. 3.5 mm headphone jacks and Micro-USB ports for charging the battery are located at the bottom. The front power LED indicates that the electricity is low, charging and rechargeable battery. There is also the rest of the buttons, D bonds and volume knobs. There is a hotkey button above the volume knob. You can use it with other buttons to perform the operations such as saving, loading, reset, and exiting the main menu. In order to avoid the high temperature in the console, I installed a small mute fan on the back. It introduces air through the intake port, and then passes through the radiator on the Raspberry Pi and then discharged again.
To replace the lithium battery and microSD card, just remove the back cover. Without screws, you can open it with a down. And I designed the cover and the area around it in a hidden manner to better hide joints.
