Step 1: Background
I pulled this laptop from a pile of back. I may not catch it, but I already have an identical thing, so I know that I can exchange some to see what is effective, what is invalid. It is streamlined to the minimum: screen and motherboard, and touchpad.
After adding RAM, the optical drive and keyboard are installed, I have to start entering the BIOS. This laptop supports USB boot, but does not support the original BIOS. The first step is to access the Dell's website for BIOS update, and then install it on the laptop. In addition, I found a great USB keyboard in the local computer rescue with 2 built-in ports. This makes me no need to exchange the keyboard between the laptop. This feature will only be supported only the new laptop. With CraigsList, I quickly found the RAM (512MB) that can be accepted, and then there is no need to recover. The last component I installed is the 802.11b mini-PCI card for wireless access (it is free, no other salvage).
I have a laptop that can be used in hand, intending to make a digital photo frame. I have completed the hard drive installation on the older laptop, but I especially want to use the more modern features built into this laptop. I use Xubuntu most of my time as the primary operating system (personal preference), and since 'Buntu 8.10, the use of USB-CREATOR software has become very simple.
The materials required (except for laptops):
2GB of flash drive (my hard drive is PNY or other things, only 15 dollars after a few years ...)
XUBuntu 8.10 Live CD
Step 2: Install xubuntu:
1. Insert flash drives, insert CD
2. After startup, create your WiFi connection. Result 3. $ sudo apt-get install USB-CREATOR
4. $ sudo USB-CREATOR
5. Operate according to the prompt, or read the instructions I use here
6. After you install the operating system on the flash drive, you can reboot (remove CD ...), make sure the BIOS is modified to ignore the hard drive and first boot from USB.
Update:
I tried to use this method again with another brand of USB memory stick, but did not start, but received a warning:
"Does not operate the pen drive ..." To resolve this issue, perform the following command in the terminal before or after installing the USB CREATOR:
Install-MBR / DEV / SDX (X represents the letters of the device, in my case / dev / sdd)
Step 3: After installing: Boot enter the USB installation
1. Create a wireless connection.
2. Built-in network manager makes you authenticate each time you start. This does not apply to the project. Instead, it is installed.
3. Re-establish the connection via the WICD.
4. Install SSH-Server and Open-SSH software package (available for remote management)
5. Create a new user using your password and give them administrative privileges. This is required for SSH management because the default login name will not allow SSH login (easy?). You still have to use 'sudo', but this will only reduce the pain.
6. Add Firefox to the launcher: "The application" "Setting Manager" "Automatically started the application" (command is only: firefox).
7. Install neat. After you specify the delay, the program will hide the mouse pointer. I add it to run at startup (the same as the above steps, command is: uncluster -idle 3). Result 8. Disable screen saver in power management. Otherwise, it will turn a blank after 10 minutes.
I tried to set some other power management functions, but when using this method, the APM is not activated when started. Benewhere is that this installation can be restarted from the hard shuttles, or even h.
Step 4: Firefox adjustment:
1. Install the "full screen" add-on. This allows you to put your laptop in "Qiji Mode" and check the preferences to start Firefox in full screen mode. Moreover, if you still don't know, F11 will switch you into and exit full screen mode. Check the first 3 boxes in the preferences.
2. Install the "Fox Saver" add-on. By default, this will acquire an image from its own database. You can specify many other places to capture images. I use the RSS feed option and link it to the PicasaWeb album so that you can add or delete images on any computer. I also set the waiting time to 1 minute (by default, I can't seem to reduce it, or reduce it) and set the slide replacement time to 180 seconds. Other settings are preferred.
3. In the address bar, type About: config, then find the setting Browser.SessionStore and set it to false by double-clicking the row. This prevents unnecessary message windows from blocking Firefox from starting each startup.
4. I created an HTML file and put it in the default home directory for the Firefox home page. Use Firefox to open it, then set it to "Edit" "Preferences" home page. It said: "Hello, the world. Your slide demonstration will start within a minute."
To exit and make cleanback (recommended), exit Alt + F4 from Firefox in full screen mode. Then restart.
** I found a warning here is that my laptop likes to have a delay of approximately 3 seconds before restarting, otherwise it will not "see" flash drive and cannot restart. Simply turn off the power, wait, and then press the button.
